Nawaqidh’ul Islam (The Nullifiers of Islam)1

The Imam and Mujaddid Muhammad ibn Abd'il Wahhab (rahimahullaah)

Bismillahirrahmanirrahim (In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful),

Know that there are ten nullifiers which nullifies Islam2:

The First (Nullifier)

Shirk (associating partners) in the worship of Allah Ta'ala. Allah Ta'ala stated:3

"Verily, Allah does not forgive that partners be associated with Him in worship (i.e., Shirk), but He forgives what is less than that to whom He wills." (an-Nisa 4/48; an-Nisa 4/116)

And (Allah) Ta'ala stated:

إِنَّهُ مَن يُشْرِكْ بِاللّهِ فَقَدْ حَرَّمَ اللّهُ عَلَيهِ الْجَنَّةَ وَمَأْوَاهُ النَّارُ وَمَا لِلظَّالِمِينَ مِنْ أَنصَارٍ

"Verily, the one who mixes partners in worship with Allah (Shirk), then Paradise has been made forbidden for him and his final abode will be the Hellfire. And the wrongdoers will not have any helpers (in Hell)." (al-Ma’idah 5/72)4

Dhabh; the offering of sacrifice to (someone/something) other than Allah, such as the one who offers a sacrifice to the Jinn or to a grave is from it (Shirk).

The Second (Nullifier)

Whoever places Wasita (intermediaries) between himself and Allah, دعا Du'a (calls, makes prayer) unto them and asks
الشَّفَاعَةَ ash-Shafa'ah (intercession) from them, and seeks تَوَكَّلُ Tawakkul (reliance) in them5, has committed Kufr (disbelief) by Ijmaa (unanimous agreement).

The Third (Nullifier)

Whoever does not make Takfir (accusing someone to be Kafir) of the Mushrikin (polytheists), or has doubts about their Kufr (disbelief) or considers their Madhhab (ways and beliefs) to be correct, has committed Kufr (disbelief) with/by Ijmaa.6

The Fourth (Nullifier)

Whoever believes that guidance other than that of the Nabi (Prophet)’s sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam (peace be upon him) is more complete than his guidance or that another Hukm (judgement) is better than his judgment, such as the one who prefers the judgement of the Tawaghit (pl., of Taghout) over his judgment, then he is a Kafir (disbeliever).

The Fifth (Nullifier)

Whoever hates anything that the Rasul (Messenger) sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam came with, even if he may act on it, has committed Kufr (disbelief).7

The Sixth (Nullifier)

Whoever mocks/ridicules anything of the
Din (religion) of Rasul sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam or the rewards or punishments of Allah has committed Kufr (disbelief).8 The evidence is the statement of (Allah) Ta’ala:

قُلْ أَبِاللّهِ وَآيَاتِهِ وَرَسُولِهِ كُنتُمْ تَسْتَهْزِئُونَ لاَ تَعْتَذِرُواْ قَدْ كَفَرْتُم بَعْدَ إِيمَانِكُمْ

"Say: Was it Allah and His verses and His Messenger that you were mocking? Make no excuses, you have disbelieved after having had faith." (at-Tawbah 9/65-66)

The Seventh (Nullifier)

Sihr (sorcery, including magic spells) that which cause al-Sarf (a person to hate something he seeks after/separation) or al-Atf (love something he doesn’t seek after/bring together). So whoever performs it or is pleased with it being done, has committed Kufr (disbelief). The evidence is the statement of (Allah) Ta’ala:

وَمَا يُعَلِّمَانِ مِنْ أَحَدٍ حَتَّى يَقُولاَ إِنَّمَا نَحْنُ فِتْنَةٌ فَلاَ تَكْفُرْ

"And neither of these two (angels) would teach anyone until they had first said to them: We are only a trial (for the people), so do not commit disbelief." (al-Baqarah 2/102)

The Eighth (Nullifier)

Mudhaaharat'ul Mushrikin (supporting and assisting) the Mushrikin (polytheists) and Mu’aawanatuhum ala'l Muslimin (aiding) against the Muslimin. The evidence is the statement of (Allah) Ta’ala:

لاَ تَتَّخِذُواْ الْيَهُودَ وَالنَّصَارَى أَوْلِيَاء بَعْضُهُمْ أَوْلِيَاء بَعْضٍ وَمَن يَتَوَلَّهُم مِّنكُمْ فَإِنَّهُ مِنْهُمْ إِنَّ اللّهَ لاَ يَهْدِي الْقَوْمَ الظَّالِمِينَ

"And whoever amongst you takes them (i.e., the disbelievers) as allies and protectors then he is indeed from among them. Verily, Allah does not guide a wrong-doing people." (al-Ma’idah 5/51)

The Ninth (Nullifier)

Whoever believes that it is permitted for some to be free of (implementing) the Shari’ah (revealed laws) of Muhammad (i.e., Islam) sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam, just as it was permitted for al-Khadir to be free from the Shari’ah of Musa (alayhi salam), then he is a Kafir (disbeliever).9

The Tenth (Nullifier)

Turning away from the Din (religion) of Allah Ta’ala, by not Ta'lim (learning) it or Amal (implementing) it (is an act of Kufr). The evidence is the statement of (Allah) Ta’ala:

وَمَنْ أَظْلَمُ مِمَّن ذُكِّرَ بِآيَاتِ رَبِّهِ ثُمَّ أَعْرَضَ عَنْهَا إِنَّا مِنَ الْمُجْرِمِينَ مُنتَقِمُونَ

"And who does more wrong than he who is reminded of the Ayat (signs/verses) of his Lord, then turns away from them. Verily, We shall extract retribution from the criminals." (as-Sajdah 32/22)

There is no difference, with regard to (committing any of) these nullifiers, between al-Haazil (joker), al-Jadd (the serious person) or al-Khaaif (the one who does so out of fear). Except for the Mukrah (the one who commits them due to being coerced), (is excused).

All of these (ten) matters are from the gravest in danger and from those that occur most often. So the Muslim must beware of them and fear from these acts befalling him.

We seek refuge in Allah from those that bring about His Anger and painful Punishment. May the peace and blessing be on the best of His creatures, Muhammad, Alihi (his family) and Sahbihi (companions)."
