Famous Qiraah that are Narrated by Tawatur (mass transmission) from the Greater Cities (of Islam)
Ibn Hazm, Jawami’us Sira

The Qiraah of the Meccan

Abu Muhammad (i.e., Ibn Hazm) said: The famous Qiraah of Mecca is the Qiraah of Abdullah ibn Kathir’ud Dari (H120). Abdullah ibn Kathir (rahimahullah), recited to Abdullah ibn'us Saib’ul Mahzumi (rahimahullah). [Abdullah ibn'us Saib]1 recited to [Rasulullah (sallallahu aleyhi ve sellem)’s Sahabi] Ubayy ibn Ka’b (radiyallahu anh) and Mujahid (rahimahullah). Mujahid (rahimahullah) recited to Ibn Abbas (radiyallahu anhuma ajmain). Ibn Abbas (radiyallahu anhuma ajmain) recited to Ubayy (radiyallahu anh) and Zayd ibn Thabit (radiyallahu anh). Both of them (i.e., Ubayy and Zayd) recited to Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).

The Qiraah of the Madinian

The most famous Qiraah of Madinah is the Qiraah of Nafi ibn Abi Nu’aym (H169). He (i.e., Nafi ibn Abi Nu’aym) recited to Yazid2, ibn’ul Ka’ka, Abd’ur Rahman ibn Hurmuz al-A’raj, Muslim ibn Jundub’ul Hudhali, Yazid ibn Ruman and Shaybah ibn Nisah. They recited to Abu Hurayrah (radiyallahu anh), Ibn Abbas (radiyallahu anhuma ajmain), Abdullah ibn Ayyash ibn Abi Rabi’a al-Mahzumi.

The Qiraah of the Kufan

The most famous Qiraah of the Kufan is the Qiraah of Asim ibn Abi’n Najud (H217 or H218) amongst the generation of Tabiin whom reached to al-Harith ibn Hassan (radiyallahu anh); amongst (the tribe of) Bani Bakr3 and the messenger of Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam). He (i.e., Asim ibn Abi’n Najud) recited to Abu Abd’ir Rahman as-Sulami and Zirr ibn Hubaysh, Uthman (ibn Affan radiyallahu anh), Ali (ibn Abu Talib radiyallahu anh), Ibn Ma’sud (radiyallahu anh), Ubayy (radiyallahu anh) and Zayd (radiyallahu anh). Zirr (rahimahullah) recited to Ibn Ma’sud (radiyallahu anh). This Qiraah is the best Qiraah according to us. Meanwhile we do not reject other Qiraah. We take refuge Allah from doing so.

The other famous Qiraah amongst the Kufan is the Qiraah of Hamza ibn Habib (H156). Hamza (ibn Habib) recited to Muhammad ibn Abd’ir Rahman ibn Abi Layla, Humran ibn A’yan, Abu Ishaq as-Sab’i, Mansur ibn’ul Mu’tamir, Mughira ibn Miksam, Ja’far ibn Muhammad ibn Ali ibn’ul Husayn ibn Ali ibn Talib may Allah be pleased with them all.

The other Qiraah is the Qiraah of A’mash. A’mash (rahimahullah) recited to Yahya ibn Wassab. Yahya recited to Alqamah (rahimahullah), al-Aswad, Ubayd4 ibn Naddle al-Hudhali, Abu Abd’ir Rahman as-Sulami and Zirr ibn Hubaysh.

The other famous Qiraah of Kufan is the Qiraah of al-Kisai (H189). He recited to Hamza, Isa ibn Umar, Muhammad ibn Abd’ir Rahman ibn Abi Layla and others.

The Qiraah of Basriyyun

The most famous Qiraah of the Basriyyun is the Qiraah of Abu Amr (H154). Abu Amr recited to Mujahid (rahimahullah), Sa'id ibn Jubayr (rahimahullah), Ikrima ibn Khalid’ul Mahzumi (rahimahullah), Ata ibn Abi Rabah (rahimahullah), Muhammad ibn Abd’ir Rahman ibn Mukhaysin and Humayd ibn Qays'ul A'raj amongst the Meccan; Yazid ibn’ul Ka’ka, Yazid ibn Ruman and Shaybah ibn Nisah amongst the Madinan; Hasan, Yahya ibn Ya’mur amongst the Basriyyun and others. All of them recited to the Sahabi.

The other famous Qiraah of Basriyyun is the Qiraah of Ya’qub ibn Ishaq al-Hadrami, the friend of Shu’bah5. Ya’qub ibn Ishaq recited to Abu Amr and others.

The Qiraah of Syrian

The most famous Qiraah of the People of Sham (Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Palestine) is the Qiraah of Abdullah ibn Amir (H118). Abdullah ibn Amir recited to Abu’d Darda (radiyallahu anh) and Mughira ibn Abi Shihab al-Mahzumi. Mughira recited to Uthman (radiyallahu anh).

There are more Qiraah of the famous Imams. However they are not famous. It is not Ja’iz (permissible) to teach such Qiraah, pray Salah with them and to write them on the Mushaf (collection of pages; i.e., Qur’an). Tawfiq (Success) is from Allah.

5- After Abu Amr ibn Ala, the Basriyyun follow the Qiraah of Shu’bah (H205).
Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said:

إِنَّ النَّاسَ دَخَلُوا فِي دِينِ اللهِ أَفْوَاجًا، وَسَيَخْرُجُونَ مِنْهُ أَفْوَاجًا

"Verily, the people have entered into the religion of Allah in crowds and they will also leave it in crowds." (Ahmad, Musnad)
