Follow the Sunnah and the Jamaa'ah

Ibn Abi'l Izz al-Hanafi (731-792H)
Muhazzabu Sharh'il Aqidat'it Tahawiyyah

Quote

"We follow the Sunnah of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) and the Jamaa'ah of the Muslims, and avoid deviation, differences and divisions."

Sunnah means the way of the Messenger (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) and

Jama’ah means the congregation of the Muslims, that it the Companions and their righteous followers until the Day of Judgment.

To follow them is to follow the correct path, and to differ from them is to go astray.

Allah has emphasized this fact many times, for example, Allah says:

"(O Prophet!) Say: If you love Allah, follow me; Allah will love you and forgive your sins for you, and Allah is Forgiving Merciful." (Al-i Imran 3/31);

"If anyone contends with the Messenger, even after guidance has been plainly conveyed to him, and follows a path other than that of the Believers, We will leave him in the path he has chosen and land him in Hell. And what an evil refuge." (an-Nisa 4/115);

"Say: Obey Allah and obey the Messenger: But if you turn away, he is only responsible for the duty placed on him, and you are responsible for that placed on you. If you obey him, you will be on right guidance. The Messenger’s duty is only to preach the clear message." (an-Nur 24/54);

"Verily this is my way, leading straight; follow it. Follow not other paths; they will scatter you about from His (great) path. Thus does He command you that you may be righteous." (al-An’am 6/153);

"Be not like those who divided among themselves and fell into disputation after receiving clear signs, for them is a dread ful penalty." (Al-i Imran 3/105)

Also:

"As for those who divide their religion and break up into sects, you have no part in them in the least. Their affairs is with Allah. He will in the end tell them the truth of all that they had been doing." (al-An’am 6/159)

In the Sunnan collections is the following Hadith which Irbad ibn Sariyyah (radiyallahu anh) narrated and which Tirmidhi evaluated as authentic. Irbad narrated:

"One day after the morning Salat, Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) exhorted us to the extent that the eyes wept and the hearts shuddered with fear. A man said:

Indeed this is a farewell exhortation. (So what) do you order us O Messenger of Allah? He (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:

I order you to have Taqwa (piety) of Allah, and to listen and obey, even in the case of an Ethiopian slave. Indeed, whomever among you lives, he will see much difference. Beware of Bid’ah (the newly invented matters), for indeed they are Dalalah (astray). Whoever among you sees that, then he must stick to my Sunnah and the Sunnah of Khulafai Rashidun (the rightly guided caliphs), cling to it with the molars."
(Tirmidhi, #2676; Abu Dawud, #4603; Ibn Ma’ajah, #42; Darimi, 1/44-45; Ahmad, Musnad, 4/126-127; Ibn Hibban, #5; Hakim, Mustadrak, 1/95)

He (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) also said in another Hadith:

"The Jews split into seventy-one Millah (sects), one of which will be in Paradise and seventy in Hell. The Christians split into seventy-two sects, seventy-one of which will be in Hell and one in Paradise. I swear by the One Whose Hand is the soul of Muhammad, my Ummah will split into seventy-three sects, one of which will be in Paradise and seventy-two in Hell. It was said:

O Messenger of Allah, who are they? He (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:

Jama’ah (the main body).
" (Tirmidhi, #2641; Ibn Ma’ajah, # 3992; Ahmad, Musnad, 3/120, 145)

Millah as the reporter explains; means here a group of people who expound Ahwa (wishful ideas).

In another version, it is reported that the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was asked what the Jama’ah is. He (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:

"What I am upon and my Companions." (Tirmidhi, #2641)

He (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) thus made it clear that all those who expound different views will be, in general, doomed, except Ahl’us Sunnah wa’l Jama’ah (the People of Sunnah and Jama’ah).

Abdullah ibn Mas’ud (radiyallahu anh), has excellently stated:

"Whoever wants to follow a path, let him follow the path of one who has died, for the living are not safe from Fitnah (trial). I mean the Companions of Muhammad (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam). They were the best of this Ummah: the purest in heart, the deepest in knowledge and the most straightforward. Allah chose them to accompany His Prophet and establish His religion, so recognize their status and follow in their footsteps and adhere as much as you can to their example of conduct and attitude, for they followed true guidance." (Ibn Abd’il Barr, Jaami Bayaan’il Ilm wa Fadluhu, 2/947, #1810; Abu Nu’aym, Hilyat’ul Awliya, 1/305; Nasr al-Maqdisi, al-Hujjah ala Tariq’ul Mahajjah, 1/159; Shaatibi, al-I’tisam, 3/307; Ibn Taymiyyah, Majma’ul Fatawa, 4/157; Aliyy’ul Qari, Mirqaat’ul Mafatih, 1/374)
Shaykh’ul Islam Ibnu Taymiyyah (rahimahullah) said:

"All statements that had been said by the Mutaakhirrin (latter ones) differing from the Mutaqaddimin (predecessors) and that had not been previously mentioned by any other, is a mistake. As Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal (rahimahullah) said:

"Refrain from speaking about a matter without an Imam!.." (Ibnu Taymiyyah, Majma’ul Fatawa, 21/291)
