Chapter Fadhl’ul Islam (The Superiority of Islam)

Allah Ta’ala says:

"This day have I perfected your religion for you, completed My favor upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion." (al-Ma’idah 5/3)

And His Ta’ala’s statement:

"Say: O ye men! If ye are in doubt as to my religion, (behold!) I worship not what ye worship, other than Allah! But I worship Allah; Who will take your souls (at death)." (Yunus 10/104)

And His Ta’ala’s statement:

"O ye that believe! Fear Allah, and believe in His Messenger, and He will bestow on you a double portion of His Mercy: He will provide for you a Light by which ye shall walk (straight in your path), and He will forgive you (your past): for Allah is Oft- Forgiving, Most Merciful." (al-Hadid 57/28)

In the Sahih it was narrated from Ibn Umar (radiyallahu anhuma ajmain) that Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:

"Your example and the example of Ahl’il Kitabayn (the people of the two Scriptures i.e., Jews and Christians) is like the example of a man who employed some laborers and asked them: Who will work for me from morning till midday for one Qirat? The Jews accepted and carried out the work. He then asked: Who will work for me from midday up to the Asr prayer for one Qirat? The Christians accepted and fulfilled the work. He then said: Who will work for me from the Asr till sunset for two Qirats? You, Muslims have accepted the offer. The Jews and the Christians got angry and said: Why should we work more and get lesser wages? (Allah) said: Have I withheld part of your right? They replied in the negative. He said: It is My Blessing, I bestow upon whomever I wish."
(Bukhari, Hadith no: 2268; Tirmidhi, Hadith no: 2871; Ahmad, Musnad, 2/6, 2/111, 2/121, 2/129)

Again it was narrated from Abu Hurayrah (radiyallahu anh) that Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:

"Allah misguided those Jama’ah (societies) who were before us concerning Jumu’ah (Friday). The Jews had Saturday and Nasara (Christians) had Sunday. And Allah brought us and guided us to Yawm’ul Jumu’ah (the day of Friday). Likewise on Yawm’ul Qiyamah (the Day of Judgment) they (i.e., the Jews and the Christians) will be after us. (Even though) we are the last Din we will be the first on Yawm’ul Qiyamah."

And it was compiled that Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:

"The most beloved Din to Allah is the tolerant Hanafiyyah (i.e., Islamic Monotheism)."
(Bukhari; Muslim; Tirmidhi; Abu Dawud; Nasa’i; Ibnu Maajah; Ahmad, Musnad)

It was narrated from Ubayy ibn Ka’b (radiyallahu anh) that he said:

"You all must adhere to Sabil (the right path) and the Sunnah. Indeed there is no Abd (slave/servant of Allah) who is upon the (right) path and the Sunnah and who remembers/mentions Allah while causing his eyes to overflow with tears due to Khashyah (the fear) of Allah, except that Naar (fire i.e., Hellfire) will not touch him. Again there is no Abd who is upon the (right) path and the Sunnah and he remembers Rahman (the Most Gracious) and his skin shivers due to fear of Allah, except that he will be like a tree with leaves that have dried. His sins will fall from him just like the leaves of this tree fall from it. Indeed, moderation in (following) the Sunnah is Khayr (better) than much effort in opposing to the (right) path and the Sunnah."

It was narrated from Abu’d Darda (radiyallahu anh) that he said:

"How wonderful is he sleep and the eating of the intelligent ones! How is it that they criticize the wakeful vigilance and fasting of the foolish people? An atom’s weight of Birr (righteousness) with Taqwa (piety) and conviction is Adhim (greater), Afdal (more virtuous) and better than the worship performed by those who are deceived."
Whosoever desires الْعِزَّةَ al-Izzah (honour, power and glory) then to Allah belong all الْعِزَّةَ al-Izzah [and one can get honour, power and glory only by obeying and worshiping Allah (Alone)]. To Him ascend (all) الْكَلِمُ الطَّيِّبُ al-Kalim al-Tayyib (the goodly words), and الْعَمَلُ الصَّالِحُ al-Amal al-Saalih (the righteous deeds) exalt it (the goodly words i.e., the goodly words are not accepted by Allah unless and until they are followed by good deeds). Chapter The Obligation of (Accepting) Islam

Allah Ta’ala says:

"If anyone desires a religion other than Islam (submission to Allah), never will it be accepted of him; and in the Hereafter He will be in the ranks of those who have lost." (Al-i Imran 3/85)

And the statement of Allah Ta’ala:

"The Religion before Allah is Islam." (Al-i Imran 3/19);

"Verily, this is my straight path, so follow it, and follow not (other) paths; they will scatter you about from His Path." (al-An’am 6/153)

Mujaahid said:

"al-Subul (the paths mentioned in the Ayah is): Bid’ah (innovations) and Shubuhaat (doubtful matters)."

It was narrated from Aishah (radiyallahu anha) that Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:

"Whoever introduces into affair of ours (i.e., Islam) that which is not from it then it (i.e., innovation) is rejected."
(Bukhari, Hadith no: 2697; Muslim, Hadith no: 1718; Abu Dawud, Hadith no: 4606; Ibnu Maajah, Hadith no: 14; Ahmad, Musnad, 6/73, 6/146, 6/180, 6/240, 6/256, 6/270)

It was also narrated with the following text:

"Whoever performs any Amaal (deed) that our affair (i.e., Islam) is not upon, and then it is rejected."

Bukhari has narrated from Abi Hurayrah (radiyallahu anh) that Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:

"All of my Ummah will enter Jannah (Paradise) except those who refuse. It was said to him: Who will refuse? The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: Whoever obeys me will enter Jannah and whoever disobeys me is the one who refuses (to enter Jannah)." (Bukhari, Hadith no: 7280; Ahmad, Musnad, 3/163)

In the Sahih (i.e., Bukhari), it was narrated from Ibnu Abbaas (radiyallahu anhuma) that Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:

"The most hated people to Allah are three:

(1) A Mulhid (deviant, religious heretic) in Haraam (i.e., sanctuaries of Makkah and Medina);

(2) one who seeks to introduce the Sunnah (way, tradition, custom) of Jaahiliyyah (pre-Islamic ignorance) into Islam;

(3) and the one who seeks to shed the blood of a Muslim man without Haqq (the right) to do so."
(Bukhari, Hadith no: 6882)

Ibnu Taymiyyah (rahimahullah) said (regarding the term the Sunnah of Jaahiliyyah):

"All types of Jaahiliyyah are included in this, Mutlaq (restrictively) or Muqayyad (without restriction). This means that some aspects of it may be in some people and not others; whether it is from the ways of Kitaabi (the People of Book the Scripture i.e., Christians and Jews), the ways of the idol worshipers or other than them. From every type of opposition to what Messengers came with."

In the Sahih (i.e., Bukhari) it was narrated from Hudhayfah (radiyallahu anh) said:

"O people of Qurra (reciters of the Qur’an), stand firm and upright (upon Islam), for then you have taken a great lead (and will be the leaders), but if you divert right or left, then you will go astray far away." (Bukhari, Hadith no: 7282)

It was narrated from Muhammad ibn Wadhdhaah that he used to enter Masjid and stand over the circles (of Ilm i.e., knowledge and learning) and he would say a word of admonition.

On one occasion he said: "(Sufyan) Ibn Uyaynah informed us from Mujaahid, who narrated from Sha’bi, who narrated from Masruq who said that Abdullah i.e., Ibnu Mas’ud (radiyallahu anh) said:

"There is not a year except that the year after it is worse than it. Do not say that a year is more prosperous than another year, or Amir (a leader) is better than another Amir. For indeed your Ulamaa (pl., Alim; scholars) and the best of you have passed away. Then there will come people who will begin to analyze matters according to their Ra’y (opinions), and thus Islam will be destroyed and breached."
Chapter The Explanation of Islam

The statement of Allah Ta’ala:

"So if they dispute with thee, say: I have submitted my whole self to Allah and so have those who follow me." (Al-i Imran 3/20)

And it has been narrated in the Sahih (Muslim) from Umar ibnu’l Khattab (radiyallahu anh) that Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:

"Islam implies that you testify that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the messenger of Allah, and you establish Salaat (daily prayers), pay Zakaat (obligatory charity), observe the fast of Ramadan, and perform pilgrimage to Bayt (the House i.e., Kabah) if you are solvent enough (to bear the expense of) the journey."
(Muslim; Hadith no: 8; Tirmidhi, Hadith no: 2610; Abu Dawud, Hadith no: 4695; Nasa’i, Hadith no: 4990; Ibnu Maajah, Hadith no: 63; Ahmad, Musnad, 1/27, 1/51-52)

And it was narrated from Abi Hurayrah (radiyallahu anh) as a Marfu (Hadith) that (Rasulullah said):

"The Muslim is he whom the Muslims are safe from his tongue and his hands."
(Bukhari, Hadith no: 10; Muslim, Hadith no: 40; Abu Dawud, Hadith no: 2481; Nasa’i, Hadith no: 4996; Darimi, Hadith no: 2716; Ahmad, Musnad, 2/159, 2/162, 2/187, 2/191-194, 2/205, 2/209, 2/212, 2/215, 2/224)

It was narrated from Bahz ibnu Hakam who reported from his father who reported from his grandfather that:

"Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was asked about Islam. So he (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:

It is that you submit your heart unto Allah, and you turn your face to Allah, and you pray Salaat, and you pay Zakaat."
Narrated by Ahmad.

Abi Qilabah narrated from Amr ibn Abasah who reported from a man from the people of Shaam (the area of Syria, Palestine and Jordan), who reported from his father that:

"Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was asked about what Islam is? So he (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:

It is that you submit your heart unto Allah, and that the Muslims are safe from your tongue and your hand. The questioner then said:

What Islam is the best? The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:

Iman (faith). The questioner then said:

What is Iman? The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:

It is that you believe in Allah, His angels, His books, His messengers and the Resurrection after death."
(Ahmad, Musnad, 4/114)
Chapter The statement of Allah Ta’ala: "If anyone desires a religion other than Islam, never will it be accepted of him."

It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah (radiyallahu anh) that Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:

"Amaal (the deeds) will come on Yawm’ul Qiyamah (the Day of Judgment); so Salaat (prayer) will come and say: O Rabb (Lord)! I am Salaat. So Allah will say: Verily you are upon Khayr (goodness). Sadaqah (charity) will come and say: O Rabb! I am Sadaqah. So Allah will say: Verily you are upon Khayr (goodness). Then Siyaam (the fasting) will come and He (i.e., Allah) will say: Verily you are upon Khayr. Then Amaal (the other deeds) will come like that, and He (i.e., Allah) will say: Verily you are upon Khayr. Then Islam will come and it will say: O Rabb! Verily You are al-Salaam (the One free of all faults) and I am Islam. He (i.e., Allah) will say: Verily you are upon Khayr. Today I will give you (reward) because of you.

Allah Ta’ala says in His Kitaab (Book i.e., Qur’an):

"If anyone desires a religion other than Islam (submission to Allah), never will it be accepted of him; and in the Hereafter He will be in the ranks of those who have lost." (Al-i Imran 3/85)"
Ahmad narrated it.

It was narrated in Sahih from Aishah (radiyallahu anha) that Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:

"Whoever performs Amal that our affair (i.e., Islam) is not upon, then it (i.e., his deed) is rejected."
(Bukhari, Hadith no: 2697; Muslim, Hadith no: 1718; Abu Dawud, Hadith no: 4606; Ibnu Maajah, Hadith no: 14; Ahmad, Musnad, 6/73, 6/146, 6/180, 6/240, 6/256, 6/270) Ahmad narrated it.
Whosoever desires الْعِزَّةَ al-Izzah (honour, power and glory) then to Allah belong all الْعِزَّةَ al-Izzah [and one can get honour, power and glory only by obeying and worshiping Allah (Alone)]. Chapter The Obligation of Being Satisfied with Following the Book Meaning the Qur’an Besides Everything Other Than It

The statement of Allah Ta’ala:

"and We have sent down to thee the Book explaining all things..." (an-Nahl 16/89)

It was narrated by Nasa’i that:

"Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) saw a page of Tawrah (Torah) in the hand of Umar ibn’ul Khattab (radiyallahu anh) so he (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:

Have you all become Mutahawwikun1, O (Umar) Ibn’ul Khattab? Indeed I have brought it (guidance) to you all, white and clean. If Musa (alayhi salam) were alive and you all followed him and abandoned me, you would have gone astray!"

In another narration (it was reported that Rasulullah said):

"If Musa (alayhi salam) were alive, he would have no choice but to follow me. Then Umar said:

I am pleased with Allah as Rabb (a Lord), Islam as Din (a religion) and Muhammad as Nabi (a Prophet)."
(Ahmad, Musnad, 3/387)

Quote
Footnotes:

1- Mutahawwik means the one who has fallen into something without proper consideration, or who is confused. (Ibn’ul Athir, an-Nihayah)
Chapter What Has Been Reported Concerning Leaving the Call of Islam

The statement of Allah Ta’ala:

"It is He Who has named you Muslims, both before and in this (i.e., Qur’an)." (al-Hajj 22/78)

It was narrated from Harith al-Ashari (radiyallahu anh) that Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:

"I command you all with five things that Allah has commanded me with:

1- to listen (to those in authority),

2- to obey (to those in authority),

3- to wage Jihaad,

4- to make Hijrah (migration) and,

5- adherence to the Jama’ah.

For whoever separates from the Jama’ah even a hand span, then he has removed the noose of Islam from around his neck, unless he comes back. And whoever calls with the calls of Jaahiliyyah (the days of ignorance) then verily he is from the dwellers of Jahannam (Hell). A man said:

O Messenger of Allah! Even if he prays and fasts? The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:

Even if he prays and fasts. So, call with the call of Allah, Who named you as Muslims, Mu’minin (believers) and slaves of Allah."

(Tirmidhi, Hadith no: 3102; Ahmad, Musnad, 5/344)

It was narrated by Ahmad and Tirmidhi and he (i.e., Tirmidhi) graded it as Hasan Sahih.

It was narrated in Sahih that (Rasulullah said):

"Whoever separates from Jama’ah a hand span, then his death is upon Jaahiliyyah."
(Bukhari, Hadith no: 7054; Muslim, Hadith no: 1849; Abi Dawud, Hadith no: 4758; Ahmad, Musnad, 5/180)

In the narration of Sahih that (Rasulullah said):

"Is it the call of Jaahiliyyah, while I am still among you?"

Abu’l Abbaas said:

"Everything that goes outside of the call of Islam and Qur’an whether it is Nasab (lineage), Balad (land), nationality, Maddhab (school of thought), Tariqah (path of mysticism) then it is from the ascriptions of Jaahiliyyah.

When a man from Muhajirin (the Immigrants) and a man from Ansaar (the Helpers) disputed and Muhajir said:

O Muhajir!.. and Ansaar said:

O Ansaar!.. The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:

Is it with the call of Jaahiliyyah (that you are calling with), while I am still amongst you?

And The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) became extremely angry at this!..
Chapter The Obligation of Entering Islam Entirely and Abandoning Everything Other Than It

The statement of Allah Ta’ala:

"O ye who believe! Enter into Islam whole-heartedly!.." (al-Baqarah 2/208)

And His (Ta’ala)’s statement:

"Hast thou not turned thy though to those who declare that they believe in the revelations that have come to thee and to those before thee?" (an-Nisa 4/60)

And His (Ta’ala)’s statement:

"As for those who divide their religion and break up into sects, thou hast no part in them in the least." (al-An’am 6/159)

Ibnu Abbaas (radiyallahu anhuma) said the following regarding the statement of Allah:

"On the Day when some faces will be (lit up with) white, and some faces will be (in the gloom of) black." (Al-i Imran 3/106)

"The faces of Ahl’us Sunnah wa’l I’tilaaf (the People of the Sunnah and Unity) will become white; and the faces of the Ahl’ul Bid’ah wa’l Ikhtilaaf (the People of Religiously Innovation and differing) will become black."

It was narrated from Abdullah Ibnu Umar (radiyallahu anhuma) that Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:

"What befell Bani Isra’il (the children of Isra'il) will befall my Ummah (nation), step by step, such that if there was one who had intercourse with his mother in the open, then there would be someone from my Ummah who would do that. Indeed the children of Isra'il split into seventy-two sects, and my Ummah will split into seventy-three sects. All of them are in the Fire Except one sect. He said:

And which is it O Messenger of Allah? He said:

What I am upon and my Companions."
(Tirmidhi, Hadith no: 2641)

The believers who hopes in the meeting with Allah should pay attention to the speech of Sadiq (the truthful one) the one who was Masduq (trusted) in what he sent with, particularly in this matter.

"What I am upon and my Companions."

Oh what an admonition this is if it falls upon hearts that are alive. This Hadith was reported by Tirmidhi and he also reported from Abu Hurayrah (radiyallahu anh) and he declared it Sahih. However the version he reported from Abu Hurayrah (radiyallahu anh) does not contain the mentioning of Hell-fire. It has also been narrated in a Hadith of Mu’awiyyah (radiyallahu anh) that was collected by Ahmad and Abu Dawud and it contains the following wording:

"Indeed there shall appear a group of people from my Ummah that will be overcome by these desires (deviations) just as a dog is overcome by its rabies. There does not remain any vein or joint in him except that it enters it."

And it has already been mentioned previously that the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:

"…and the one who seeks to introduce Sunnah (the way) of Jaahiliyyah into Islam." (Bukhari, Hadith no: 6882)
Whosoever desires الْعِزَّةَ al-Izzah (honour, power and glory) then to Allah belong all الْعِزَّةَ al-Izzah [and one can get honour, power and glory only by obeying and worshiping Allah (Alone)]. Chapter What Has Been Reported Concerning Bid’ah (Religiously Innovations) Being Worse Than Ka'ba’ir (Major Sins)

The statement of Allah:

"Allah forgiveth not that partners should be set up with Him; but He forgiveth anything else, to whom He pleaseth." (an-Nisa 4/48)

The statement of Allah:

"But who doth more wrong than one who invents a lie against Allah, to lead astray men without knowledge?" (al-An’am 6/144)

And the statement of Allah Ta’ala:

"That they may, on the Day of Judgment, their own burdens in full, and also (something) of the burdens of those without knowledge, whom they misled. Alas, how grievous the burdens they will bear!" (an-Nahl 16/25)

In the Sahih it was narrated that Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said regarding the Khawaarij:

"Wherever you find them, then kill them!.."
(Bukhari, Hadith no: 3611, 5057; 6930; Muslim, Hadith no: 1066; Abi Dawud, Hadith no: 4767; Nasa’i, Hadith no: 4102-4103; Ibnu Maajah, Hadith no: 175; Ahmad, Musnad, 1/81, 1/113, 1/131, 4/424, 5/36)

It was also narrated in it (i.e., the Sahih) that Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) forbade (rebelling and) killing the tyrant leaders as long as they pray Salaat.1

It was narrated from Jarir bin Abdullah (radiyallahu anh) that a man gave some Sadaqah (charity) then people enjoined him to give Sadaqah. So Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:

"Whoever starts a good Sunnah (way) in Islam, and then he will have its Ajr (rewards) and the reward of whoever acts according to it after him without decreasing anything from their rewards in the least. And whoever starts an evil Sunnah in Islam, then upon him is its burden (of sin) and the burden of whoever acts according to it after him without decreasing anything from their burdens in the least." (Muslim, Hadith no: 1017; Tirmidhi, Hadith no: 2675; Ibnu Maajah, Hadith no: 203; Nasa’i, Hadith no: 2554; Darimi, Hadith no: 512, Hadith no: 514; Ahmad, Musnad, 4/357-358, 4/360, 6/362)

It was narrated by Muslim. Its similar was narrated from Abi Hurayrah (radiyallahu anh) with the (following) wording:

"Whoever calls to Hidayah (guidance), (…) then he (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: Whoever calls to Dalalah (misguidance)…" (Muslim, Hadith no: 2674; Tirmidhi, Hadith no: 2674; Abi Dawud,  Hadith no: 4609; Ibnu Maajah, Hadith no: 211; Darimi, Hadith no: 513; Ahmad, Musnad, 2/397)

Quote
Footnotes:

1- There are many Ahadith in this regards and among them which were related by Muslim in his Sahih are:

Hudhayfa ibn’ul Yaman (radiyallahu anh) narrated that Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:

"There will be leaders who will not be led by my guidance and who will not adopt my ways? There will be among them men who will have the hearts of devils in the bodies of human beings. I said:

What should I do. Messenger of Allah, if I (happen) to live in that time? He sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) replied:

You will listen to the Amir and carry out his orders; even if your back is flogged and your wealth is snatched, you should listen and obey." (Muslim, Hadith no: 1847);

It was narrated from Awf ibn Malik (radiyallahu anh) that Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:

"The best of your rulers are those whom you love and who love you, who invoke Allah's blessings upon you and you invoke His blessings upon them. And the worst of your rulers are those whom you hate and who hate you and whom you curse and who curse you. It was asked (by those present):

Shouldn't we overthrow them with the help of the sword? So he (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:

No, as long as they establish prayer among you. If you then find anything detestable in them. You should hate their administration, but do not withdraw yourselves from their obedience." (Muslim, Hadith no: 1855)
Whosoever desires الْعِزَّةَ al-Izzah (honour, power and glory) then to Allah belong all الْعِزَّةَ al-Izzah [and one can get honour, power and glory only by obeying and worshiping Allah (Alone)]. Chapter What Has Been Reported Concerning Sahib’ul Bid’ah (the Practitioner of Religiously Innovations) that Being Prevented by Allah From Tawbah (Repentance)

This was narrated as the Hadith of Anas (radiyallahu anh) and it is amongst the Mursal of Hasan (al-Basri).1 Ibnu Wadhdhaah narrated from Ayyub that he said:

"There was a man among us who held an opinion (that was deviant) but then he abandoned it. Then I went to Muhammad Ibnu Sirin and said:

Do you feel that so-and-so has abandoned his view? He replied:

Look at what he has changed to now. Verily the end of the Hadith (about the Khawaarij) is more severe against them than the beginning of it:

"They will leave out of Islam just as the arrow leaves out of the bow, then they will not return to it."

Ahmad bin Hanbal (rahimahullah) was asked about the meaning of this statement and he said:

"They will not be guided to Tawbah."

1- It was narrated from Hasan al-Basri (rahimahullah) that the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:

"Verily Allah veils or he said keeps back the (acceptance of) Tawbah from every practitioner of realigiously innovation until he leaves his innovation." (Ibnu Abi Asim, as-Sunnah)
Whosoever desires الْعِزَّةَ al-Izzah (honour, power and glory) then to Allah belong all الْعِزَّةَ al-Izzah [and one can get honour, power and glory only by obeying and worshiping Allah (Alone)]. Chapter The Statement of Allah: "Ye People of the Book! Why dispute about Ibrahim?"

The statement of Allah Ta’ala:

"Ye People of the Book! Why dispute ye about Ibrahim, when Tawrah (the Torah) and Injil (the Gospel) were not revealed till after him? Have ye no understanding? Ah! Ye are those who fell to disputing (even) in matters of which ye had some knowledge! But why dispute ye in matters of which ye have no knowledge? It is Allah Who knows, and ye who know not! Ibrahim was not a Jew nor yet a Christian; but he was true in Faith, and bowed his will to Allah's (which is Islam), and he joined not gods with Allah."(Al-i Imran 3/65-67; al-Baqarah 2/135)

And His statement:

"And who turns away from the religion of Ibrahim but such as debase their souls with folly? Him We chose and rendered pure in this world: And he will be in the Hereafter in the ranks of Saalihin (the Righteous)."(al-Baqarah 2/130)

Concerning this there is the Hadith of Khawaarij which has preceded. And the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:

"The family of Abi so-and-so are not my Awliya (pl., Wali; friends, supporters). My Awliya are only Muttaqun (god fearing pious people)." (Ahmad, Musnad, 4/203)

It was narrated from Anas (radiyallahu anh) that:

"It was mentioned to Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) that one of the Sahaabah said:

I will not eat meat. Another Sahaabah said:

I will stand all night in prayer and not sleep. Another Sahaabah said:

I will not marry women. Another Sahaabah said:

I will fast and not break my fast. So the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:

But I stand at night for prayer and I sleep and I fast and I break my fast and I marry women and I eat meat. So whoever turns away from my Sunnah, then he is not of me!.."

So take note!.. When some of the Sahaabah wanted to devote themselves to Ibadaah (worship) worship, this harsh statement was said concerning them, and their deeds were called “turning away from the Sunnah!..” What do you think about Bid’ah other than these? And what do you think about people who are not Sahaabah (of the Prophet)?
Chapter The Statement of Allah Ta’ala: "So set thou thy face truly to the religion being Hanif…"

The statement of Allah Ta’ala:

"So set thou thy face truly to the religion (Islam) being Hanif (upright); Fitrah (the nature) in which Allah has made mankind: no change (there is) in the work (wrought) by Allah: that is the true Religion: but most among mankind know not." (ar-Rum 30/30)

The statement of Allah Ta’ala:

"And this was the legacy that Ibrahim left to his sons, and so did Yaqub; Oh my sons! Allah hath chosen the Faith for you; then die not except in the state of submission." (al-Baqarah 2/132)

And His statement:

"So We revealed to thee: Follow the ways of Ibrahim the True in Faith, and he joined not gods with Allah." (an-Nahl 16/123)

It was narrated from Ibn Mas’ud (radiyallahu anh) that Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:

"Every Nabi had a Wali among the Prophets. My Wali is my father Ibrahim the Khaalil of my Lord." Then he (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) recited the Ayah:

"Without doubt, among men, the nearest of kin to Ibrahim, are those who follow him, as are also this Prophet and those who believe: And Allah is the Protector of those who have faith." (Al-i Imran 3/168)" (Tirmidhi, Hadith no: 2995)

It was narrated by Tirmidhi.

It was narrated from Abi Hurayrah (radiyallahu anh) that Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:

"Verily Allah does not look to your faces and your wealth but He looks to your heart and to your deeds." (Muslim, Hadith no: 2564; Ibnu Maajah, Hadith no: 4143)

It was narrated from Ibnu Mas’ud (radiyallahu anh) that Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:

"I am your predecessor at Kawthar (the Lake-Fount) and some men amongst you will be brought to me, and when I will try to hand them some water, they will be pulled away from me by force whereupon I will say:

O Lord, my companions!' Then the Almighty will say:

You do not know what they did after you left, they introduced new things into the religion after you." (Bukhari, Hadith no: 6576; Muslim, Hadith no: 2297; Ibnu Maajah, Hadith no: 3057; Ahmad, Musnad, 3/384, 1/439)

It was narrated from Abi Hurayrah (radiyallahu anh) that Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:

"I love to see my brothers. They (the hearers) said:

Aren't we your brothers, O Messenger of Allah? He (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:

You are my companions, and our brothers are those who have, so far, not come into the world. They said:

O Messenger of Allah, how would you recognise those persons of your Ummah (nation) who have not yet been born? He (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:

Supposing a man had horses with white blazes on foreheads and legs among horses which were all black, tell me, would he not recognize his own horses? They said:

قال
Certainly, O Messenger of Allah. He (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:

They would come with white faces and arms and legs owing to ablution, and I would arrive at the Cistern before them. Some people would be driven away from my Cistern as the stray camel is driven away. I would call out: Come, come. Then it would be said (to me):

These people changed themselves after you, and I would say:

Be off, be off."
(Bukhari, Hadith no: 2367; Muslim, Hadith no: 249; Nasai, Hadith no: 150; Ibnu Maajah, Hadith no: 4306; Ahmad, Musnad, 2/300, 2/408; Malik, Muwatta, Hadith no: 60)

It was related in Bukhari that (Rasulullah said):

"While I was sleeping, a group (of my followers were brought close to me), and when I recognized them, a man (an angel) came out from amongst (us) me and them, he said (to them):

Come along. I asked:

قال
Where? He said:

To the (Hell) Fire, by Allah. I asked:

قال
What is wrong with them? He said:

They turned apostate as renegades after you left.

Then behold! (Another) group (of my followers) were brought close to me (repeated the same as above):

So I did not see anyone of them escaping except a few who were like camels without a shepherd." (Bukhari, Hadith no: 6587)

It was related in the Hadith of Ibnu Abbaas (radiyallahu anhuma) that (Rasulullah said):

"I will say just as the Salih servant (Isa ibn Maryam) said:

“I was a witness over them whilst I dwelt amongst them; when Thou didst take me up Thou wast the Watcher over them, and Thou art a witness to all things." (al-Ma’idah 5/117)"
(Bukhari, Hadith no: 150, Hadith no: 264, Hadith no: 6526; Muslim, Hadith no: 2860; Tirmidhi, Hadith no: 3464)

It was also narrated as a Marfu report that (Rasulullah said):

"Every child is born with Fitrah (a true faith i.e., to worship none but Allah Alone) but his parents convert him to Judaism or to Christianity or to Magainism, as an animal delivers a perfect baby animal. Do you find it mutilated?

Then Abi Hurayrah (radiyallahu anh) recited the Ayah:

"The nature in which Allah has made mankind." (ar-Rum 30/30)"
(Bukhari, Hadith no: 4775; Muslim, Hadith no: 2658; Ahmad, Musnad, 2/233, 2/275, 2/346, 2/410, 2/481; Malik, Muwatta, Hadith no: 569) It is Muttafiqun Alayh (narrated by both Bukhari and Muslim).

It was narrated from Hudhayfah (radiyallahu anh) that he said:

"The people used to ask Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) about Khayr (good), but I used to ask him about Sharr (evil) for fear that it might overtake me. Once I said:

We were in Jaahiliyyah (ignorance) and in Sharr and Allah has bestowed upon us the present Khayr; will there by any Sharr after this Khayr (goodness)? He (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:

Yes. I asked:

Will there be Khayr after that Sharr? He (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:

Yes, but it would be tained with Dakhan (i.e., Little evil). I asked:

قال
What will its Dakhan be? He (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:

There will be some people who will lead (people) according to principles other than my tradition. You will see their actions and disapprove of them. I said:

Will there by any Sharr after that Khayr? He (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:

Yes, there will be some people who will invite others to the doors of Hell, and whoever accepts their invitation to it will be thrown in it (by them). I said:

O Allah's Messenger! Describe those people to us. He (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:

They will belong to us and speak our language. I asked:

What do you order me to do if such a thing should take place in my life? He (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:

Adhere to the group of Muslims and their Chief. I asked:

If there is neither a group (of Muslims) nor a chief (what shall I do)? He (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:

Keep away from all those different sects, even if you had to bite (i.e., eat) the root of a tree, till you meet Allah while you are still in that state." (Bukhari, Hadith no: 3606, Hadith no: 7084)

It was narrated by Muslim with the following Ziyadah (addition):

قال
What will come next? He (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:

Then Dajjal (the Antichrist) will come forth accompanied by a river and fire. He who falls into his fire will certainly receive his reward, and have his load taken off him, but he who falls into his river will have his load retained and his reward taken off him. I then asked:

قال
What will come next? He (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:

The Last Hour (i.e., the end of the world) will come." (Muslim, Hadith no: 1847; Abi Dawud, Hadith no: 4244)

Abu’l Aliyyah said:

"Learn Islam. Then once you learned it do not turn away from it. You must adhere to the Straight Path for verily it is Islam. And do not move from the Path, not to the right nor to do left. And you must adhere to the Sunnah of your Prophet. And beware of the desires (i.e., deviations)."

Notice this statement of Abu’l Aliyyah, for indeed it is great. And you should take note of his time in which he was warning agaist the desires that whoever follows them turns away from Islam. Also notice his explanation of Islam and the Sunnah and his fear for the eminent Tabi’in (successors i.e., the students of the Sahaabah and their scholars, that they might leave the Sunnah and the Book (Kitaab, i.e., Qur’an).

Thus the meaning of Allah’s statement becomes clear for you, where He says:

The statement of Allah Ta’ala:

"Behold! his Lord said to him: Submit (thy will to Me): He said: I submit (my will) to the Lord and Cherisher of the Universe." (al-Baqarah 2/131)

And His statement:

"And this was the legacy that Ibrahim left to his sons, and so did Yaqub; Oh my sons! Allah hath chosen the Faith for you; then die not except in the state of submission." (al-Baqarah 2/132)

The statement of Allah Ta’ala:

"And who turns away from the religion of Ibrahim but such as debase their souls with folly?" (al-Baqarah 2/130

And there are other evidences (i.e., Ayaat and Ahadith) that are similar to these and they are the major fundamentals that are Asl’ul Usoul (the foundation of the fundamentals of Islam). Yet, the people are heedless of them. By being aware of this basic fundamental, the meaning of of Ahadith that address this matter and other similar Ahadith become clear. However, the person who reads these evidences and similar evidences, and he feels certain that they do not pertain him, and he thinks that they refer to people that have passed away before, then it is people like him who feel secure against the plan of Allah. Yet, no one feels safe against the plan of Allah except the people who are losers.

"Did they then feel secure against Allah's devising; but no one can feel secure from the Plan of Allah, except those (doomed) to ruin!" (al-Araf 7/99)

It was narrated from Ibnu Mas’ud (radiyallahu anh) that he said:

"Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) drew a line on the ground for us. Then he (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:

This is Sabil (the Way) of Allah. Then he (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) drew lines from its right and its left, and he (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:

On everyone of these paths there is Shaytaan (a devil) calling to it. And he (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) recited the Ayah:

"Verily, this is My Way, leading straight: follow it: follow not (other) paths: they will scatter you about from His Path." (al-An'am 6/153)" (Darimi, Hadith no: 202; Ahmad, Musnad, 1/435)

It was narrated by Ahmad and Nasa’i.
Chapter What has been Reported Regarding Strangeness of Islam and the Virtues of Ghuraba (Strangers)

The statement of Allah Ta’ala:

"Why were there not among the generations before you persons possessed of balanced good sense prohibiting (men) from Fasaad (mischief) in the earth except a few among them whom We saved (from harm)?" (Huud 11/116)

It was narrated from Abi Hurayrah (radiyallahu anh) as a Marfu report:

"Islam began as something strange and will go back to being strange, so Tuba (glad tidings) to Ghurraba (the strangers)." (Muslim, Hadith no: 145-146; Tirmidhi, Hadith no: 2629-2630; Ibnu Maajah, Hadith no: 3986-3988; Ahmad, Musnad, 2/389)

Narrated by Muslim.

Ahmad narrated from Ibnu Mas’ud (radiyallahu anh) that it was said:

"Who are Ghuraba (the strangers)? He (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: Strangers who have left their families and tribes."
(Tirmidhi, Hadith no: 2629; Ibnu Maajah, Hadith no: 3988; Darimi, Hadith no: 2755; Ahmad, Musnad, 3/398)

In another version it was said:

"Ghuraba are those who are righteous when the people have become corrupt (or wicked)." (Ahmad, Musnad, 4/73)

Tirmidhi narrated from Kathir bin Abdullah from his father and from his grandfather:

"So Tuba is for Ghuraba who correct what the people have corrupted from my Sunnah after me." (Tirmidhi, Hadith no: 2630)

It was narrated from Abi Umayyah that he said:

"I asked Abu Thalabah (radiyallahu anh):

O Aba Thalabah, what do you say about this Ayah?

"O ye who believe! Guard your own souls: If ye follow (right) guidance, no hurt can come to you from those who stray." (al-Ma’idah 5/105)

And he said:

By Allah!..Indeed you have asked one who knows about it. I asked Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) and he said:

Rather it means, command each other to do good and forbid each other from evil until you see greediness that is obeyed, desires being followed, worldliness being preferred and every person who has an opinion being pleased with his own opinion. Then (at that time) take care of your ownslf and leave the common people (i.e., avoid them). For verily after you all, there will be days when the person who is patient during them will be like someone holding a burning coal (in his hand). The one who works (righteous) deeds in those days will have the reward of fifty men who do deeds like your deeds. We said:

(Fifty men) from them or us? He (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) replied:

Nay from you."
(Abi Dawud, Hadith no: 4341; Tirrmidhi, Hadith no: 3335; Ibnu Maajah, Hadith no: 4014)

It was narrated by Abi Dawud and Tirmidhi.

Ibnu Wadhdhaah narrated a Hadith from Ibnu Umar (radiyalalhu anhuma) with the same meaning and the wording is as follows:

"Verily, after you all there will be days in which the one who is patient during them, adhering to his Din (i.e., Islam) like what you all are upon today, he will have the reward of fifty of you. It was said:

O Messenger of Allah, fifty of them (or fifty of us)? He (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:

Rather fifty of you." (Ibnu Wadhdhaah, al-Bid’ah wa’n Nahyi anh)

Then Ibnu Wadhdhaah said: Muhammad bin Sa’id informed us that Asad informed them that Sufyan bin Uyaynah narrated from Aslam al-Basri, who reported from Sa’id the brother of Hasan who said that Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:

Yes (the reward of fifty of you).

Verily, today you are all upon clear guidance from your Lord. You command the good and forbid the evil, and you make Jihaad in fi Sabilillah (the Way of Allah). Also the two intoxications have not appeared among you; the intoxication of Jahl (ignorance) and the intoxication of the love of life. But you all are going to change from that (which you are on now). So whoever adheres to the Book and the Sunnah on that day (i.e., in those times) then he will have the reward of fifty. It was said:

قال
Fifty of them? He (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) replied:

Nay, from you." (Ibnu Wadhdhaah, al-Bid’ah wa’n Nahyi anh)

It has also Isnaad (chain of narration) from Mafiri that Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:

"Tuba (a huge tree in Jannah) is for Ghuraba. They are those who adhere to the Book when it will be abandoned, and act according to the Sunnah when it will be extinguished."
Chapter The Warning Against Bid’ah

It was narrated from Irbad bin Sariyah (radiyallahu anh) that he said:

"Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) admonished us with an intense sermon. So we said:

O Messenger of Allah. It is as though this is a farewell sermon, so counsel us. He (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:

I counsel you to have Taqwa (fear) of Allah, and to listen and obey (your leader), even if a slave were to become your Amir. Verily he among you who lives long will see great controversy, so you must keep to my Sunnah and to the Sunnah of the Khulafa’ur Rashidin (the Rightly Guided Caliphs), those who guide to the right way. Cling to it stubbornly (literally: with your molar teeth). Beware of Bid’ah (newly invented matters in the religion), for verily every Bid’ah is Dalalah (misguidance)."
(Abi Dawud, Hadith no: 4607; Tirmidhi, Hadith no: 2676; Ibnu Maajah, Hadith no: 44)

Tirmidhi said (after narrating it):

"Hasan Sahih Hadith."

It was narrated from Hudhayfah (radiyallahu anh) that he said:

"Every act of Ibadaah (worship) that Ashab of Muhammad (salllallahu alayhi wa sallam) were not performing then you all (the latter generations) should not perform it either. For indeed the first (generation) has not left any statement for the last (generations). So fear Allah o community of Qurra (reciters of Qur’an) and take the path of those who were before you." It was narrated by Abi Dawud.

Darimi said that Hakim Ibn’ul Mubarak told them that Amr bin Yahya told them that he heard his father narrating from his father that he said:

"We used to sit by the door of Abdullah bin Mas’ud (radiyallahu anh) before the Morning Prayer, so that when he came out we would walk with him to the mosque. (One day) Abu Musa al-Ash’ari (radiyallahu anh) came to us and said:

Has Abu Abd’ur Rahman (i.e., Ibnu Mas’ud) come out yet? We replied:

No. So he sat down with us until he came out. When he came out, we all stood along with him, so Abu Musa said to him:

O Abu Abd’ur Rahman! I have just seen something in the mosque which I considered wrong, but all praise is for Allah, I did not see anything except good in it. He inquired:

فقال
What is it? He (i.e., Abu Musa) replied:

If you live you will see it. He continued and said:

I saw in the mosque people sitting in circles awaiting the Prayer. In each circle they had pebbles in their hands and a man would say: Repeat Allahu Akbar a hundred times. So they would repeat it a hundred times. Then he would say: say La-ilaha Illallah a hundred times. So they would say it a hundred times. Then he would say: say Subhanallah a hundred times. So they would say it a hundred times. Ibnu Mas’ud asked:

What did you say to them? He (i.e., Abu Musa) said:

I did not say anything to them. Instead I waited to hear your view on it. Ibnu Mas’ud replied:

Would that you had ordered them to count their evil deeds and assured them that their good deeds would not be lost! The narrator continued and said:

Then we went along with him until he came to one of these circles whereby he stood and said:

What is this I see you doing? They replied:

O Abu Abd’ur Rahman! These are pebbles upon which we are counting Takbir, Tahlil and Tasbih. He (i.e., Ibnu Mas’ud) said:

Count your evil deeds instead. I assure you that none of your good deeds will be lost. Woe to you, O Ummah of Muhammad (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) how quickly you go to destruction! Here are your Prophet's Companions available in Mutawafirun (abundance). And there are his clothes which have not yet decayed and his bowl which is unbroken. By Him in Whose Hand is my soul! Either you are following a Religion that is better guided than the Religion of Muhammad (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), or you are opening a door of misguidance. They said:

O Abu Abd’ur Rahman! By Allah, we only intend good! He (i.e., Ibnu Mas’ud) said:

How many are there who intend good but do not achieve it. Indeed Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said to us: A people will recite the Qur'an but it will not pass beyond their throats. By Allah! I do not know, but perhaps most of them are from among you.

Then he left them. Amr bin Salima said:

We saw most of those people fighting against us on the day of Nahrawan, on the side of the Khawaarij." (Darimi)
Epilogue

This is the end of what has been made easy (by Allah).

Allah is the One Who is sought for help and upon Him one puts his trust. May Allah mention our leader Muhammad among His noble gathering of Angels and may He bestow peace and blessing upon him, and his family and all of his companions.
(Fatir 35/10)
