Khutbat’ul Ha’ajah1

“All thanks and praise is due to Allah, we seek His help and forgiveness. We seek refuge in Allah from the evil within ourselves and the consequences of our evil deeds. Whoever Allah guides will never be led astray, and whoever Allah leads astray will never find guidance.

I bear witness there is no -true- God -deserving to be worshiped- but Allah, alone without any partners, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and His Messenger.

“O ye who believe! Fear Allah as He should be feared and do not die except as Muslims in submission to Him.” (Al-i Imran 3/102);

“O mankind! Fear your Guardian Lord, Who created you from one soul and created out of it his mate and from them twain scattered (like seeds) countless men and women. Fear Allah, through Whom ye demand your mutual (rights), and (be heedful) the wombs (that bore you): for Allah ever watches over you..” (an-Nisa 4/1);

“O you who believe! fear Allah, and make your utterance straight forward. That He may make your conduct whole and sound, and forgive you your sins: He that obeys Allah and His Messenger, has already attained the great victory..” (al-Ahzab 33/70-71)

Verily, the most truthful speech is Kalaamullah, the best guidance is the guidance of Muhammad (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), and the worst affairs are newly invented matters. Every newly invented matter is a Bid’ah (religious innovation), and every Bid’ah is Dalalah (misguidance), and every misguidance is in the (Hell)fire.

Wa ba’d (to proceed).”

1- This Dua (prayer) that is well-known as “Khutbat’ul Ha’jah (The Sermon of Necessity)” is recited by Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) during his Jumu’a Khutbah (Friday Sermon) and other occasions, it was also taught to the Sahabah by Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam). It was recorded by Tirmidhi, Abu Dawud, Nasai, Abu Ya’la, Bayhaqi, Imam Ahmad with a Sahih (sound) Sanad (chain of narration) and some of it was narrated by Muslim. Shaykh’ul Islam Ibnu Taymiyyah (rahimahullah) stated the following regarding it:

فَهَذِهِ الْخُطْبَةُ عِقْدُ نِظَامِ الْإِسْلَامِ وَالْإِيمَانِ

“This Khutbah is a knot between the Islamic system and the Iman.” (Ibnu Taymiyyah, Majmu’ul Fatawa, 14/223)
Shaykh'ul Islâm Ibnu Taymiyyah (Rahimahullâh) stated,

Our Da’wah (Call)

Our sole purpose primarily, is to circulate the Aqidah of Tawhid everywhere we are able to reach. This is the call of all the Rasul (messenger) and Nabi (prophet) from Adam (alayhi salam) to the Khatam’ul Anbiya (the last of the prophets) Muhammad (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), striving against all types of Kufr and Shirk that nullify Tawhid and exposing fake deities and Taaghout which call people to worship them. Allah Ta’ala states the following Ayah in this regards:

وَقَاتِلُوهُمْ حَتَّى لَا تَكُونَ فِتْنَةٌ وَيَكُونَ الدِّينُ كُلُّهُ لِلّٰهِ فَإِنِ انْتَهَوْا فَإِنَّ اللّٰهَ بِمَا يَعْمَلُونَ بَصِيرٌ
“And fight them on until there is no more persecution, and religion becomes Allah's in its entirety.” (al-Baqarah 2/193; al-Anfal 8/39)

In addition, the Aqidah of “al-Wara wa’l Bara” which is one of the most important Rukn (pillar) of Tawhid, the Takfir of the Mushrikin fixed to the Aqidah of “al-Wara wa’l Bara”, accordingly the limits of Imaan and Kufr becoming evident is one of the hallmarks of our Da’wah. The removal of the doubts regarding the matters of Aqidah, especially in the matters of Imaan and Kufr that are innovated by the Dai (caller) of Baatil (falsehood) is also one of our purposes. We aspire to establish the Wasat (medium) Aqidah of Ahl’us Sunna wa’l Ja’maah that is far from Ifrat (taking maters to the extreme) and Tarfit (neglecting its true meaning).

After Tawhid, the most important topic we call to is the Sunnah. Connotation especially to the matters of Aqidah but not limited to it; accepting and practicing every matter of Islam as Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) and his Ashaab counseled and lived, also rejecting every Bid’ah innovated after them. Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) in a Sahih (authentic) Hadith stated that his Ummah (nation) will be divided into seventy-three sects and that only one of them will be saved. Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) named them as Firqa’i Naajiyah (the Saved Group) and described their affair stating:

مَا أَنَا عَلَيْهِ وَأَصْحَابِي
“(Those who follow) my path and the path of my Ashaab (companions)... ”2

The Ahl’us Sunnah wa’l Ja’maah is the only group that follows this noble path.

No individual or group entered the saved group by merely identifying themselves as Ahl’us Sunnah. The most apparent quality of the Ahl’us Sunnah is submitting to the Salaf’us Salihin (the righteous predecessors) whom are the best of the people and the first three generations (of beginning of the Islam) and staying away from the Bid’ah and Munkar (evil) that was innovated by the Khalaf (later generations). As narrated in the Sahih (of Bukhari) from Imran bin Husayn (radiyallahu anh) Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) stated:

“The best of my followers are those living in my generation (i.e. my contemporaries). And then those who will follow the latter. -Imran (radiyallahu anh) added: I do not remember whether he mentioned two or three generations after his generation- There will come after you, people who will bear witness without being asked to do so, and will be treacherous and untrustworthy, and they will vow and never fulfill their vows, and fatness will appear among them."3

After Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) and his Ashaab, the Rabbani Ulama took on the mission of calling to Tawhid and the Sunnah fitting the Hadith:

الْعُلَمَاءُ خُلَفَاءُ الأَنْبِيَاءِ إِنَّ الأَنْبِيَاءَ
“The scholars are the successors of the prophets."4

At this point, our goal is to become a bridge between Ilm and the people by conveying the legacy concerning the Ilm (sacred knowledge) of the Rabbani Ulama, which attained the mission of calling to Tawhid and the Sunnah after the prophets. The source of this Ilm reaches Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) through Jibril-i Amin (alayhi salam) to the Lord of the Worlds (Jalla wa Jalaluhu). The Ulama will represent this Ilm until the Day of Qiyamah (Doomdsay). Since Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) stated:

لاَ يَزَالُ مِنْ أُمَّتِي أُمَّةٌ قَائِمَةٌ بِأَمْرِ اللّٰهِ، لاَ يَضُرُّهُمْ مَنْ خَذَلَهُمْ، وَلاَ مَنْ خَالَفَهُمْ، حَتَّى يَأْتِيَهُمْ أَمْرُ اللّٰهِ وَهُمْ عَلَى ذٰلِكَ
"A group of people amongst my followers will remain obedient to Allah's orders and they will not be harmed by anyone who will not help them or who will oppose them, till Allah's Order (the Last Day) comes upon them while they are still on the right path."5

That is why it is also our goal to spread the books of the Ulamaa (pl. Alim; scholars) whom had been stand bearers of the Aqidah of the Ahl’us Sunnah wa’l Jama’ah throughout history and the Ilm that they inherited from Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam). In order to reach this goal; we take the Manhaj (methodology of attaining Ilm) of the Salaf’us Salihin whom are praised by Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) as base for us. We would like to convey the legacy of the A’immah (pl. Imam) of Hadith and Sunnah who had not been affected from Kalaam (theological rhetoric) and philosopy, persistent upon the Aqidah of Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) and his Ashaab, in short; the scholars among the Firqa-i Najiyaah and “Taifat’ul Mansura (Victorious Group)”.

Our call (Inshallah) will never be calling people to our own views that have no base from the Salaf nor to groups that have been consituted by the Asabiyyah (tribalism/nationalism) of Jaahiliyyah (the prelslaamic days of ignorance).

Tawfiq (success) is lies in Allah Ta’ala...

Hamad bin Atiq (1227H-1301H)

He is the Allamah, Hamad bin Ali bin Atiq, from the Ulamaa of Najd; born in az-Zulafi in the year 1227H, and he was appointed by Imam Abd'ur Rahman bin Hasan al'ush Shaykh as a Qadhi (judge) of several cities (such as al-Kharaj and al-Aflaj); he is an author of many beneficial works in Aqidah (creed) and Fiqh (jurisprudence), amongst them Ibtal'ut Tandid Sharh Kitab'ut Tawhid, and Sabil'un Najat wa'l Fikak and many other treaties. He became one of the most well known Fuqaha (pl., Faqih; jurists). He had many known students and some notable names amongst his students are, his son Sa’d, Imam Abdullah bin Abd'ul Latif, Shaykh Sulayman bin Sahman, and Shaykh Hasan bin Abdullah bin Hasan. He passed away in al-Aflaj in the year 1301H, and left behind ten sons, a number of whom also later became judges.

May Allah have mercy upon him...

The Muqaddimah (Preface of Hamd Ibnu Ali Ibnu Atiq)

Bismillahirahmanirahim (in the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious the Most Merciful).

We seek help only from Him, and there is no Might or Power except in Allah; al-Aliyy (the Highest) al-Adhim (The Magnificent)! All praise be to Allah, Who has sent to His slave (i.e. Muhammad) the Kitaab (Book i.e. Qur’an) which stands without any crookedness. Allah Ta’ala made it infallible for the one who takes hold of it and depends on it concerning the inference. Allah Ta’ala made it obligatory to boycott Ahl’ush Shirk (the People of Shirk) with/by clarifying the Shari’ah (Islamic law) and the Minhaaj (methodology).

May the Salaat (peace) and the Salaam (blessings) be upon Muhammad; he is who Allah ripped apart injustices/darkness of the Shirk with, by the light (i.e. Qur’an) along with him. May the Salaat (peace) and the Salaam (blessings) be upon his Al (family), his Sahabah (companions); they were those who fought the Ahl’ul Kufr (People of the Disbelief) and distanced themselves from them without mixing.

Amma Ba’d (to proceed):

Verily, I have spoken about -and I emphasized it- regarding the Nahy (forbidding) upon the Muwalaat (alliance) with the Mushrikin, and I called the Muslimin around me to have enmity towards the Kafirin.

Then, I wrote some of the Ayaat that are the evidence upon it, along with a few words from the Kalaam (speech) of some of the Muhaqiqin (verifiers) among Ahl’ul Ilm wa’d Din (People of the Sacred Knowledge and the Religion). What I thought was that those who read the Qur’an and believes that it is the Kalaam of Allah and surely Allah is Who we worship with the Amal (deed) and the Qiyam (standing) hears this does nothing but submit to Him and obey, also hasten to the hearing and the obeying of His Hukm (rules) because of the statement of Allah Ta’ala:

اتَّبِعُواْ مَآ أُنزِلَ إِلَيْكُم مِّن رَّبِّكُمْ وَلاَ تَتَّبِعُواْ مِن دُونِهِ أَوْلِيَآءَ قَلِيلاً مَّا تَذَكَّرُونَ
“Follow what has been sent down unto you from your Lord, and follow not any Awliya (protectors), besides Him (Allah). Little do you remember!..” (al-A'raf 7/3);

“But no, by your Lord, they can have no faith, until they make you judge in all disputes between them, and find in themselves no resistance against your decisions, and accept (them) with full submission.” (an-Nisa 4/65);

“… Then if there comes to you guidance from Me, then whoever follows My guidance he shall neither go astray nor shall be distressed. But whosoever turns away from My Reminder, verily, for him is a life of hardship, and We shall raise him up blind on the Day of Resurrection. He will say: O my Lord! Why have you raised me up blind, while I had sight (before). (Allah) will say: Like this Our Ayat came unto you, but you disregarded them, and so this Day, you will be neglected.” (Ta-Ha 20/123-126)

So, denial of this matter (i.e. the principle of "showing friendship towards Muslimin and showing enmity towards Kuffar") occurred from some of the Jaahilin (ignorant ones) and the Mu’annidin (stubborn ones). They strove against the establishment and the affirmation that Allah obligated. So those who are attributed to the Ilm and those who claim that they are seekers of Ilm became various groups in this regard:

A Ta’ifah (group) of them: Even though they do not openly express it, they find this deviant opposition of the Jaahilliyyah to be good and they are content with it. Indeed, it is apparent upon their faces.

Another Ta’ifah: They disliked opposing its companion (i.e. doer) and considering them ignorant however, they did not commit what Allah Ta’ala obligated upon them such as Radd (rejection) of this and Inkaar (denial) of the one upon it.

Even if, it was not the case for them for what reason did they equalize the opponent with one who responds to them? Therefore, in this regards our Shaykh Abd’ir Rahman bin Hasan (rahimahullah)6 wrote a beneficial Risalah (pamphlet) in order to reject this opponent. He nullified them with his creative nullifying statements. It is sufficient to reject them. So he (in this regards) became our Shaykh (Abd’ir Rahman bin Hasan). He (rahimahullah) is Imam of the Ta’ifah that rejects the sayings of Ahl’ul Baatil (People of The Falsehood) and their Munkarat (pl. Munkar; evil wicked deeds). Allah Ta’ala is the Helper of His Din and will make His Din victorious over all religions even though the unbelievers may detest (it).7

Then I am going to write some wordings Inshallah Ta’ala, among them, is clarification of some matters that cause those who attribute themselves to Islam -rather most of them are those who attribute themselves to the Ilm- to be erred. For this Allah Ta’ala states:

إِنَّ الَّذِينَ يَكْتُمُونَ مَآ أَنزَلْنَا مِنَ الْبَيِّنَـتِ وَالْهُدَى مِن بَعْدِ مَا بَيَّنَّـهُ لِلنَّاسِ فِي الْكِتَابِ أُولَـئِكَ يَلْعَنُهُمُ اللَّهُ وَيَلْعَنُهُمُ اللَّـعِنُونَ
“Verily, those who conceal the clear proofs, evidences and the guidance, which We have sent down, after We have made it clear for the People in the Book, they are the ones cursed by Allah and cursed by the cursers.” (al-Baqarah 2/159);

“(And remember) when Allah took a covenant from those who were given the Scripture (Jews and Christians) to make it (the truth) known and clear to mankind, and not to hide it, but they threw it away behind their backs, and purchased with it some miserable gain! And indeed worst is that which they bought.” (Ali Imran 3/187)

(Among the topics of this book are:)

From it is: Wujuub (necessity) of enmity to the Kuffar and the Mushrikin and also severing ties from them;

From it is: That which the man became a Murtad with;

From it is: What will be Udhr (excuse) for the man who performs Muwafaqah8 with the Mushrikin and manifests obedience to them;

From it is: The issue of the manifesting the Din;

From it is: The issue of Istadha’af (weakness, oppression; vulnerability);

From it is; The Wujuub Hijrah (migration) and its remainder (until Qiyamah; the Doomsday).

I named this book “Sabîl’un Najât wa'l Fikâk min Muwâlât’il Murtadîn wa’l Atrâk (The Path of Salvation and Freedom Against Befriending the Apostates and the Turks)”.9

I ask Allah Ta’ala to make it based upon the Ikhlaas (sincerity), and those who read it or hear it requesting deliverance and salvation benefits from it.

Footnotes:

6- The respected Shaykh’s full name is Abd’ir Rahman bin Hasan bin Muhammad bin Abd’il Wahhab an-Najdi at-Taymi. Abdu’r Rahman bin Hasan (rahimahullah) is the grandson of Shaykh’ul Islam Muhammad bin Abd’il Wahhab (rahimahullah). He was born in 1193H/1779AD and died in 1285H/1869AD. He is one of the most eminent scholars after Shaykh’ul Islam Muhammad bin Abd’il Wahhab (rahimahullah) in Najd. He has many books and Risalah (pamphlets) such as the Sharh of “Kitaab’ut Tawhid” of his grandfather “Fath’ul Majid”. His son was the respected Shaykh Ishaaq (rahimahullah), who wrote the great book The Ruling of Muayyan Takfir and the Difference Between the Reaching of the Hujjah and the Comprehension of Hujjah May Allah have mercy upon him, upon all of the Ulama of Najd, upon Ibnu Taymiyyah and his students, and upon all the Ulama before them, Amin.

7- Allah Ta’ala states:

“Their intention is to extinguish Allah's Light (by blowing) with their mouths: But Allah will complete His Light, even though the Unbelievers may detest (it).” (as-Saff 61/8)

8- Muwafaqah literally means harmony, compliance, or agreement. Refer back to: ad-Dalail fi Hukm Muwalaat Ahl’il Ishraak

9- In some sources the name of the book is mentioned as: “Sabil’un Najaat wa’l Fikaak min Muwalaat’il Murtadin wa Ahl’il Ishrak (The Path of Salvation and Freedom Against Befriending the Apostates and the Mushrikin)”. Whereas in the copy that we used for the translation, it is mentioned as we had translated above: “Sabîl’un Najât wa'l Fikâk min Muwâlât’il Murtadîn wa’l Atrâk (The Path of Salvation and Freedom Against Befriending the Apostates and the Turks)”. We believe that the name of the books changed afterwards due to political reasons.

Mentioning the Turks in the title of the book surely does not reflect Qawmiyya (tribalism) against the Turks. As it is possible to find people amongst all nations to have Iman (belief), and vice verse is also common.

The statements mentioned in the book are related to the soldiers of the Egyptian Government who entered into the Najd region during the era of Shakyh Hamd bin Atiq (rahimahullah) and Shaykh Sulayman (rahimahullah). As it is known both the Shaykhs; Hamd bin Atiq and Shaykh Sulayman wrote their renowned books “Sabil’un Najaat” and “ad-Dalalil” for the sake of warning people against having friendship with these soldiers who commits many Bid’ah (innovation), superstition and Shirk related to the Qubur (graves). (Refer back to: ad-Durar’us Saniyya, Bab’u Jihaad, 309)

It is known that the Ulama (pl., Alim; scholars) of Najd were declaring Takfir (excommunication i.e. declaring someone as being disbeliever in Islam) of the Government of Egypt and their soldiers who are subjects of the Turkish Government (Ottoman Empire). This issue is constant in many of their books. Even more they declared Takfir of those who befriend them, become their subjects, consent towards them and taking them as confidant other than the Muslimin.

At this point a question appears in the mind of people: If the ruling of the famous scholars with regards to the condition of those who claim to be Muslim and wail for such state, then what would be their statements and views concerning the slaves of the contemporary Yasiq (man-made laws)? What would be their rulings and views concerning showing friendship to their armed forces; soldiers and police with the fear of deprivation from the worldly ornament and possessions such as houses, high status and dignity? What would be the ruling concerning those who vow to service them sincerely and respect their (man-made) laws? What would be the views of these scholars if they were living these days of ours?
Shaykh'ul Islâm Ibnu Taymiyyah (Rahimahullâh) stated,

"The Âlim (scholar) recognizes the Jâhil (ignorant) since he was once a Jâhil. The Jâhil does not recognize the Âlim since he has never been an Âlim." (Shaykh'ul Islâm Ibnu Taymiyyah, Majmű'ul Fatâwâ, 13/235)
