بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمنِ الرَّحِيمِِ

I am the Faqr (Poor in Relation to Allh)3

Shaykhul Islm Ibnul Qayyim (Rahimahullh) stated the following regarding Shaykhul Islm Ibnu Taymiyyah (Rahimahullh):

وَبَعَثَ إِلَيَّ فِي آخِرِ عُمُرِهِ قَاعِدَةً فِي التَّفْسِيرِ بِخَطِّهِ، وَعَلَى ظَهْرِهَا أَبْيَاتٌ بِخَطِّهِ مِنْ نَظْمِهِ

() in the later part of his life he sent me a Qidah (principle) about Tafsr (written) by his hand writing, and on its back was verses of poetry (written) by his hand writing from his poetry:4

أَنَا الْفَقِيرُ إِلَى رَبِّ الْبَرِيَّاتِ ... أَنَا الْمُسَيْكِينُ فِي مَجْمُوعِ حَالَاتِي
I am the Faqr (poor) to the Rabb (Lord) of the creation5,
I am the littlest Miskn (helpless in relation to Allh) in all my conditions.

أَنَا الظَّلُومُ لِنَفْسِي وَهِيَ ظَالِمَتِي ... وَالْخَيْرُ إِنْ يَأْتِنَا مِنْ عِنْدِهِ يَأْتِي
I am the most Dhlim (transgressor) of my Nafs (soul) and it has transgressed against me,
If the Khayr (good) comes to us6, it comes from Allh.

لَا أَسْتَطِيعُ لِنَفْسِي جَلْبَ مَنْفَعَةٍ ... وَلَا عَنِ النَّفْسِ لِي دَفْعُ الْمَضَرَّاتِ
Neither can I bring any benefit to my soul,
Nor can I push away the harms from my soul.

وَلَيْسَ لِي دُونَهُ مَوْلًى يُدَبِّرُنِي ... وَلَا شَفِيعٌ إِذَا حَاطَتْ خَطِيئَاتِي
I do not have a Mawl (protector) other than Him who oversees me.
Also there is no Shaf (intercessor) for me other then Him when my errors have surrounded me.7

إِلَّا بِإِذْنٍ مِنَ الرَّحْمَنِ خَالِقِنَا ... إِلَى الشَّفِيعِ كَمَا قَدْ جَاءَ فِي الْآيَاتِ
Except with permission from ar-Rahmn (the Most Merciful), our Creator,
To the Shaf8, as it has come in the yt (pl. of yah; verses of the Qurn).

وَلَسْتُ أَمْلِكُ شَيْئًا دُونَهُ أَبَدًا ... وَلَا شَرِيكٌ أَنَا فِي بَعْضِ ذَرَّاتِ
I would never own a thing without Him,
Neither would I have partnership of any atom.

وَلَا ظُهَيْرٌ لَهُ كَيْ يَسْتَعِينَ بِهِ ... كَمَا يَكُونُ لِأَرْبَابِ الْوِلَايَاتِ
Nor am I an aid for Him to relieve Him9,
Unlike it is the case for the Lords (possessors) of authority (on earth),

وَالْفَقْرُ لِي وَصْفُ ذَاتِ لَازِمٍ أَبَدًا ... كَمَا الْغِنَى أَبَدًا وَصْفٌ لَهُ ذَاتِي
Faqr (being poor and needy in relation to Allh) to me is a permanent description of my Dht (self) eternally.
Just as the Ghin (being; free of all wants and eternal richness) is an eternal description of His Dht.

وَهَذِهِ الْحَالُ حَالُ الْخَلْقِ أَجْمَعِهِمْ ... وَكُلُّهُمْ عِنْدَهُ عَبْدٌ لَهُ آتِي
This state is the state of the entire creation.
All of them in His presence are slaves for Him as I am.

فَمَنْ بَغَى مَطْلَبًا مِنْ غَيْرِ خَالِقِهِ ... فَهُوَ الْجَهُولُ الظَّلُومُ الْمُشْرِكُ الْعَاتِي
Thus, whoever rebels by bringing one to the position of being request from other than his Khliq (Creator),
Then he is a; al-Jahl (the most ignorant), the most Dhlim, al-Mushrik (the pagan/idol worshiper), al-t (the insolent)

وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ مِلْءَ الْكَوْنِ أَجْمَعِهِ ... مَا كَانَ مِنْهُ وَمَا مِنْ بَعْدُ قَدْ يَاتِي
All praise -as much as the universe all together- is for Allh,
That which is from it and that which may come after it.10

1- Allh Tal states,

يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ أَنتُمُ الْفُقَرَاء إِلَى اللَّهِ وَاللَّهُ هُوَ الْغَنِيُّ الْحَمِيدُ
O mankind! Ye are the poor in your relation to Allh. And Allh! He is al-Ghaniyy (the One Free of all wants, and eternal rich), al-Hamd (the Owner and worthy of all praise). (Ftir 35/15)

2- These verses of poetry with similar wording- are given completely or partially- in the books al-Jmiu li Tafsrul Imm Ibnu Rajjab al-Hanbal (2/206) and Ikhtiyr al-l fi Sharh Hadth Ikhtism al-Malaul Al (1/117) by Ibnu Rajjab al-Hanbal, at-Tahbr li Yadhh Maniit Taysr (1/130-131) by al-Amr as-Sann, Ghyatul Amn (2/289 footnote number 1) by Mahmd Shukr al-Als, al-Mustadrak fi Macm Fataw Shaykhul Islm Ibnu Taymiyyah (1/144), and in many other sources. Inshallh we will present the translation of the text of this poem from the books of Ibnul Qayyim (Rahimahullh) and Ibnu Abdil Hd (Rahimahullh); both of them were the students of Shaykhul Islm Ibnu Taymiyyah (Rahimahullh).

4- Shaykh Ibnu Abdil Hd (Rahimahullh) stated the following regarding Shaykhul Islm Ibnu Taymiyyah (Rahimahullh):

وَقد وجد بِخَط الشَّيْخ أَبْيَات قَالَهَا بالقلعة وَهِي

() some verses of poetry written by the handwriting of the Shaykh were found which he said in prison, and it is as follows:

5- In the copy of Ibnu Abdil Hd (Rahimahullh) this verse is presented as follows,

أَنا الْفَقِير إِلَى رب السَّمَاوَات
I am the Faqr (poor) to the Rabb (Lord) of the heavens,

6- The word يَأْتِنَا found in the copy of Ibnul Qayyim (Rahimahullh) is recorded as جَاءَنَا in the copy of Ibnu Abdil Hd (Rahimahullh). There is not much difference between the meaning of the words thus it does not differ in the translation either. Wallhu Alam (And Allh knows best)!

7- In the copy of Ibnu Abdil Hd (Rahimahullh) this verse is presented as follows,

وَلَا شَفِيع إِلَى رب البريات
Also there is no Shaf (intercessor) to the Lord of the creation.

8- In the copy of Ibnu Abdil Hd (Rahimahullh) this verse is presented as follows,

رب السَّمَاء كَمَا قد جَاءَ فِي الْآيَات
The Lord of the sky, as it has come in the yt (pl. of yah; verses of the Qurn).

9- The statement كَيْ يَسْتَعِينَ بِهِ found in the copy of Ibnul Qayyim (Rahimahullh) is recorded as كَيْمَا أعاونه in the copy of Ibnu Abdil Hd (Rahimahullh). There is not much difference between the meaning of the words thus it does not differ in the translation either. Wallhu Alam (And Allh knows best)!

10- In the copy of Ibnu Abdul Hd (Rahimahullh) the poem ends with the following additional verses,

ثمَّ الصَّلَاة على الْمُخْتَار من مُضر ... خير الْبَريَّة من مَاض وَمن آتِي
Then may Salt (blessings) be upon the chosen one (Muhammad Sallallahu Alayhi wa Sallm) from amongst the Mudhar (tribe),
The best of the creation from the (ones created in the) past and that will come (created in the future).
Shaykh'ul Islm Ibnu Taymiyyah (Rahimahullh) stated,

والعالم يعرف الجاهل؛ لأنه كان جاهلا، والجاهل لا يعرف العالم لأنه لم يكن عالما

"The lim (scholar) recognizes the Jhil (ignorant) since he was once a Jhil. The Jhil does not recognize the lim since he has never been an lim." (Shaykh'ul Islm Ibnu Taymiyyah, Majm'ul Fatw, 13/235)
